TONIGHT IS BUZZ BEACH BALL!
96.5 The Buzz presents BUZZ BEACH BALL at Berkley Riverfront Park with shows starting at 2:30 pm. Headlining the show will be Phoenix and ALT-J.
Phoenix is an alternative rock band from Versailles, France whose first singles were released in 2000. Their track “Too Young” was in the soundtrack for the movie Lost in Translation which was directed by band member Thomas Mars’ future wife Sofia Coppola.
In 2009 the band’s new album Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix brought them national recognition with their hits “Lisztomania”, “1901” and “Too Young.” Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix won Best Alternative Music Album at the 2009 Grammy Awards.
Following the albums release, Phoenix appeared at various major music festivals including Austin City Limits, Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza just to name a few.
This year the bands fifth album BANKRUPT was released with top 40 hits “Entertainment” and “Trying to be Cool” leading the way to another successful album.
Alt-J is a British Band who has taken Kansas City by storm. This British quartet met at LeedsUniversity in 2008 and signed a recording contract with Infectious Records in 2011. Their first album “The Awesome Wave” was released last year and draws on multiple musical genres including folk, rock bass, catchy pop and hip hop beats.
Last winter Alt-J’s sold out performance at The Midland Theater served as the backdrop for the groups concert documentary, “An American Wave.” Kansas City has embraced Alt-J and the documentary gives insight to their success in our city.
Glide Magazine says it best, “Kansas City claims a unique place in the still-unfolding story of Alt-J. As one of the first American cities to embrace the band outside of the traditional cultural spheres on the coast, Kansas City has shown the world what its residents have known for years – that it’s a modern, progressive city with a healthy appetite for art, music, and culture.”
I personally believe Alt-J is one of the most exciting bands to emerge in recent years and one to watch out for!
Shemekia Copeland is performing at KC Live in the Power and Light on Sunday evening and she’s fantastic! I saw her perform at Knucklehead’s last year with Marcia Ball and Samantha Fish and it was a knockout!
She’s opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined the Chicago Blues Festival, scored critics choice awards from both sides of the Atlantic and shared the stage with Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Mick Jagger, and Eric Clapton. She has even performed at the White House for President and Mrs. Obama.
Shemekia Copeland is one of the very best blues artist performing today and your chance to see her live is this Sunday atPower and Light, don’t miss her!
